But but but. We will hear music more often with short EPs/albums. Still my top band. But they can lick it.

I was just talking to a buddy that enjoys them (no where near our level), but even his ass was wondering when a new album was going to come out. I guess I'm just expecting too much. I mean they are in their 40's with kids and families...there isn't but so much I can expect. I just wish I was in my 20's when they were in their prime.

They should stop making new music and stick to the live show.

You guys know I'm a fan of Nick's but I find what PNUT said a bit hard to believe. I'll be pleasantly surprised it it's even remotely true.

Agreed. if it is only tweeted, don't buy into it. They pay for web hosting for a reason, so that everybody can read it and share it out via their own form of social media. They need to get back in connection with their own website.

In other news 311live.com is now launched! about 6 months ago......... pretty old for news

I read that Pnut interview. pretty cheese ball article, but he did say the new stuff is dark. also said spring 2014 as likely release date.

dark is a good sign I guess. its "in" to be dark these days. I can use some new 311. maybe they will play some new stuff this summer. 311 day is a tuesday, so maybe they will do that for the release.

Despite not being in the “mainstream eye” since they released an island-tinged rendition of The Cure’s “Love Song” nearly a decade ago

Dude I figured there was NO WAY 311 was gonna go "dark", but than read the interview with P-Nut and my mind was blown. Particularly by this:

Darker themes, even lyrically.” What?! This is 311, you guys are all about the POSITIVITY! He went on to explain, “I think even more people will relate to this album. The positive thing is tough for a lot of people to swallow, for whatever reason. That IS who we are, but I don’t know, it’s nice to kind of admit that in the world that we live in it’s pretty difficult for some people. It’s an endless source of both inspiration and frustration, so why not make music out of it.” The bassist added, “I’ve always felt that, at least in demo form, our music is darker than the philosophy behind the lyrics can end up, in the final product. I think my job in the room when we’re writing is to help shape that.”

So, what P-Nut is saying that, or at least the way I read it and take it is:
Our band is about positivity it is who we are but because some people can't swallow it were gonna be poseurs and change our sound.

I mean, we, the diehard 311 fans, have bought into the positive vibe and message that 311 generates and it is a huge reason why many of us love them, when he says some people he isn't talking about US the loyal 311 fans. So I'm taking this as saying that they are trying to get back in the mainstream again and get to a new audience, rather than playing the music that is what they are about and that their diehard fans who own all their albums and see them live every summer prefer.

Moreover, they are all older now, kids and the family thing, so why would you go "dark"?? It doesn't add up, does it people?
Now if like what happened around the recording of Evolver, with one of Nick's best friends committing suicide, happened again, than I'd easily understand. If one, or more, members of the band have had something really awful happen, example: parent passing away, it would all add up.

But, at least from this interview, it seems it's not that its marketing, bullshit!

The thing that pisses me off more than anything is that they know that the 311 faithful, the hardcore fans, will buy the new album if even they completely change to a dark style, because we just want anything they make, so they can get away with it.

Also, I COMPLETELY disagree with fans like 'pnutwannabe' that say they want no new music and just touring. I want new stuff, even if it's never gonna be as great as 'Transistor', 'Music', 'Grassroots', or '311' there is always 3 or so great songs per new album, and that is at least something, to me at least.

Personally I'd prefer that 311 start releasing EP's instead of full length albums. A 3 or 4 song EP every year and a half would be great, and with EP's they could really turn up the experimentation by making each EP have a different sound, I'd especially love this because chance to get an EP where SA is lead vocals on entire EP.

LOL, more than anything I'd love to get my hands on the Transistor "Z Sides", you know "Earth People", "Clone Me", "Writer's Block Party" and all those songs that no one really knows if they actually exist or knows anything about them at all!

I think 311 should experiment with their sound before they become stale and each album is indistinguishable from the last.

As artists they should be able to explore different aspects of music and writing lyrics, including darker themes. I don't even really know what pnut meant by that. But I would say I'm more excited by that then most of what they've said in the last few years. I appreciate their message of be positive and love your life, but as a 35year old I just can't be 100% positive. I'm not a millionaire musician that gets to tour the world and live the life though. I also suspect that they live in a bubble of positivity which may explain why their last few albums have rang somewhat hollow for a lot of us. We are in the real world.

Smoke: 311 could still experiment with their sound without going "dark" or even abandoning the positive vibe. I mean they could have the new album have...

-more songs with Nick on piano
-have SA as lead vocals on entire album
-have SA experiment with Radiohead 'Kid A' style looping
-make more very fast short (under 2 minute) songs
-311 used to be called rap metal, could make a metal song
-LOL go Metallica and play with a full orchestra
....

exactly, Nick can only go so dark would be my guess. It's not like he's fucked up on some hard drugs anymore.

Now that might be an album worth making, get all them in a house for a month and let them get fucked up and create music. See what they have after 30 days, film it and throw it on MTV. Get millions of new fans, become current, look like rock stars, and sell a million drug addled records.
