my blog
Re: my blog
here's a new one. Its called "Satellite Cathedral". Each piece from this new series contains elements referencing spiritual gathering places. Each one contains a major light source that acts as a manifestation of the gathered figures and interlocking objects in the spaces. The narratives are intentionally vague. And give the viewer an opportunity to place themselves within the space.

Re: my blog
Names are useless and people rely on them to much, or they look for meaning in the title as if its going to be an answer to the visuals. I don't feel the need with these new works to title them, because for the most part, they are about strictly formal concepts. Something like a color relationship can be just as important as any kind of narrative content.

Re: my blog
it's a conceptual decision and given plenty of consideration. A lot of times the work starts out with a name, and then at some later point I become unsatisfied with the name for some reason, at least with these. With these particular new works, I don't believe a name contributes to the concept in any way.

Re: my blog
Its really awesome because my roommate dumpster dives at the freshman dorms at the end of the year when rich kds get rid of their stretchers, paints, canvas, etc so I dont end up having to spend a ton of money on materials.

Re: my blog
What medium are these paintings in?
I would like to major in art. I like the art courses I take, and in any lecture class my notes end up covered with (pretty good) drawings. I just don't think I have the talent to make a living :\

Re: my blog
All of my work is in oil. Typically painted on canvas and occasionally masonite.
"Ignus Fatuus"
Its like the embodiment of the Will-O'-the Wisp phenomena. Its like the idea of the lights that mysteriously appear over lakes and swamps. I was hoping the figure would be some sort of physical embodiment of it. Like a phantom or left over energy:

Re: my blog
the phenomena is also referred to as Friar's Lantern. I almost like that more than the Latin, but its really hard to say which is a more appropriate title. Ignis Fatuus has more inherent formalism, but then again the Catholic origins for the definition of Friar almost suggests a sort of religious iconography without adhering itself, wholly, to what the term, Friar's Lantern suggests (mysterious lights mentioned above).

Re: my blog
Basically, I'm having a difficult time with titles. I think it will just be titled, "Vigil XI" as it has a lot of the same compositional elements as the other paintings titled "Vigil" in the series(there are ten prior to this one)
