Hip Hop reccomedations?
is there anybody else like the roots? that is a real band? or is all the "good" hip hop like Lil wayne and kanye west?
I feel like I have lost my mind when I read the reviews of Lil wayne's stuff - he gets such rave reviews and when i listen to it, it sounds like music made by and for retarded people.
thanks

I just realized I haven't listened to any hip hop in over a year. There is certainly a lot of great stuff out there though. And Ray, I completely agree.

Re: Hip Hop reccomedations?
I never really listen to hip hop or rap, but I saw these guys, The Sollilaquists of Sound, open for 311 in Orlando, and they put on an incredible show. Goood stuff.
Edit: Also, I just noticed that green man in my signature dances to this song perfectly

im not the only one that thinks like this. there are many people in the hip-hop community that listen to all types of hip-hop artists, alot of them that people like jorje listens to, that find jay to be one of the best. despite what you think jojo, i listen to alot more than t-pain and kanye west. i know my hip-hop, maybe not as many underground artists as some, but i know my fair share and im not a noob in the subject of proper good hip-hop.

People Under the Stairs - O.S.T. (2002), The Next Step, Questions in the Form of an Answer, and their newest record, Fun DMC.

These guys are just fucking solid. The group is two guys. One produces, the other DJ's, but they both MC. They sample a lot of soul, jazz, and funk sounds. I recommend giving OST a spin first. It's the record that drew me to them.
Jazz Liberatorz - Clin D'oeil
part 1 - http://www.mediafire.com/?zlxibi5pd3l
part 2 - http://www.mediafire.com/?zlxibi5pd3l
Another solid record from '08. I actually found out they have a new release while I was searching for this record. Yea for me.
Look Daggers (2mex and Ikey Owens) - Suffer In Style
http://www.mediafire.com/?nzttjmmktej
This record is about a year old (though it's been online for nearly 2) and should be what you are looking for. I'm not a big fan of 2mex, but this is an original ass record. It fits in your desires for hip hop with a band.
For me, however, the best thing to come out of hip hop over the past five years in the instrumental sounds coming out of LA. Ever since Dilla hooked up with Stones Throw, giving Madlib a huge boost in popularity, LA has been the home of some of the most interesting music I've ever heard.
Flying Lotus - Los Angeles (2008; record of the year IMO), 1983 (2006),

The Gaslamp Killer - My Troubled Mind EP (2009)

Oh No - Dr. No's Oxperiment (2007)
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ey5jomz7wjv
Ahh, there is so much more I want to share, but unfortunately, I have to get to class. Hopefully you give some of these a spin, Ray. And hopefully they are better than Little Wayne and Kanye.

Re: Hip Hop reccomedations?
I was going to recommend Jazz Liberatorz but I think Jorge beat me to it. Go with Nujabes and Shin-Ski, too.
