Charley, you're a little devil! You've been talking big smack about LeBron James ever since he's been in the league. Hey, Charley, he's still only 21 years old. Can you name a 21-year-old who was this good? — Kavi Devulapalli, Cleveland
Since I'm 6-9, 242, I'm actually a big devil.
In any case, James was born on Dec. 30, 1984, which makes him 22, not 21. There have been plenty of players who proved their greatness at age 21. Like Julius Erving, Dolph Schayes, Spencer Haywood, Max Zaslofsy, and a guy named Michael Jordan. Among the outstanding 22-year-olds would be Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, and Magic Johnson.
I certainly do enjoy (and am in awe of) LBJ's special skills — which do not have to be enumerated here. My criticisms of him center around the incomplete nature of his game.
His free-throw woes in the clutch are both personally embarrassing and subversive of any serious championship hopes the Cleveland faithful might maintain. While he has certainly learned how to use his quick hands to successfully snipe at any ball that a nearby opponent fails to fully protect, LeBron's defensive footwork and body-balance are still deficient.
But it's the hype that really irks me. Even LeBron has bought into all the King James nonsense — as evidenced by the lettering on the wrist band that he wears during ball games.
