Post by $lmjimy311 »

What tiers do you place each album in (1 being the highest and going down from there)

1. Transistor, Grassroots, Soundsystem, Stereolithic
2. Music, From Chaos, Omaha Sessions, Evolver
3. 311
4. Uplifter, Universal Pulse
5. Don't Tread on Me

As far as tiers what is this based on. Production quality? Personal connection? Like vs. Dislike? It's kind of a relative question. I think I'm alot different than most when it comes to 311. I appreciate and enjoy every single album. I love seeing all the hate that everyone gives DTOM, Uplifter & UP. I just shake my head and just don't get it. I personally like them all. Yeah there cheesy parts and may feel incomplete in some aspects, but you could make that argument about every 311 album in some regards and songs as well.

I'll just rank this on my personal enjoyment and what album gives me the most feels. Keep in mind I havent connected to Stereolithic as much yet as I'm still listening.

1. Soundsystem
2. Evolver
3. Universal Pulse
4. Stereolithic
5. Don't Tread On Me
6. From Chaos
7. Blue
8. Grassroots
9. Music
10. Uplifter
11. Transistor
12. Omaha Sessions

Keep in mind that I've been listening to these albums for the past 18 years. So some of them don't carry the weight that they used to for me. There was a point at one time I thought Grassroots was the greatest album of all time lol.

If these 2 songs were on uplifter I would have rated it higher
"How Long Has It Been"
"Sun Come Through"

But they're not and I really don't care for the majority of the albums on Uplifter except
"get down"
and "it's alright"

Where as on DTOM has these songs which I enjoy
"Don't Tread On Me"
"thank your lucky stars"
"Long for the Flowers"
"It's Getting OK Now"
"There's Always an Excuse"
"Solar Flare"

After the "Uplifter" honeymoon was over. I found I really didn't care for it. I mean, how they fuck did they not include the 2 best songs on the album...

1) Grassroots, Transistor, Music, 311
2) From Chaos, Soundsystem, Omaha Sessions
3) Stereolithic
4) Evolver
5) Universal Pulse, Uplifter (Only because I count Sun Come Through as an Uplifter song; otherwise would be below UP)
6) DTOM

Shadow "ass guy" OSX, don't get me wrong, it isn't anything like I don't really like any of them, in fact I still enjoy even their worst album. I'm not ranking them compared to anything but themselves. It's all relative to you. I personally can't rank them individually which is why i prefer the tiered system.

For me:

Albums in each tier are ordered by preference

Tier 1: Masterpiece
GOOD TO BAD SONG RATIO 100%/0%
a) Grassroots, b) Soundsystem, c) 311, d) Transistor,

Tier 2: Great
GOOD TO BAD SONG RATIO: 90%/10%
a) From Chaos, b) Music, c) Stereolithic

Tier 3: Overall Good
GOOD TO BAD SONG RATIO: 80%/20%
a) Evolver b) Omaha Sessions

Tier 4: Some Good, Some Bad
GOOD TO BAD SONG RATIO: 50%/50%
a) Universal Pulse, b) Uplifter

Tier 5: Mostly Filler with a few Decent Songs
GOOD TO BAD SONG RATIO: = 30%/70%
a) Don't Tread on Me

Out of curiosity, what songs off of Music do you consider to be bad?

Tiers of original studio albums

Post by Mindspin »

Tier 1 - Music, Grassroots, Blue, Transistor
Tier 2 - Soundsystem
Tier 3 - Evolver, Stereolithic
Tier 4 - Uplifter
Tier 5 - From Chaos
Tier 6 - Don't Tread on Me

For now Stereolithic in the same general tier as Evolver but it could eventually become a clear superior. From Chaos would be in the same tier as Uplifter if it weren't for the Deluxe Edition - I like "I Like the Way" and "Get Down", and I don't like half of the rest of the songs on Uplifter at all. I only like half the songs on From Chaos, but I only love a couple on each of those two album. I only like 5 songs on DTOM and don't love any of them.

I don't have UP up there because I refuse to acknowledge it as an album. It's only 29 minutes so I consider it EP. I like 6 or 7 of the songs but don't love any. If I absolutely had to put it up there, it would be in between Tiers 5 and 6. And man, I probably haven't even listened to Omaha Sessions in 10 years! I'd think I'd rather listen to the earlier versions of the Omaha era songs that were remade for Music. But OS is a compilation so I don't count it with these albums.

I listened to the whole 311 catalogue over the past 4 days for this lol.

1. All pre-music, grassroots, transistor, music, 311
2. Soundsystem, stereolithic (both on the edge of tier 1)
3. Evolver, from chaos, uplifter ( I really like uplifter, has some really creative stuff on it)
4. Universal pulse (too short and horrible production quality knock it out of tier 3)
5. Don't tread on me (garbage with the exception of 2 or 3 tracks)
Music's what i need to keep my sanity

I think I'd pretty much agree with your list except I'd switch 4 and 5 around.
