No I don't think they're now getting soft. They have been getting softer for a long time. Band members age and bands "mature". Top 5 albums? Seriously? Why would you even expect Stereolithic to be in the top 5? My top 5? Music, Grassroots, Blue, Transistor and Soundsystem. That's been my top 5 since 1999 and it has never changed. I don't expect it to. But just for those 5 awesome albums and all the great shows, I owe 311 my loyalty for life and will always buy their albums on release day. I will do my best to give every album a chance and appreciate it for what it is. I just know better to get my hopes up too much so I'm not disappointed.

This album is in my top 5 for sure. I might move it to the top 3 if it has staying power.

It might be in my top five, replacing Soundsystem. But I grew up on Grassroots and Music, I listened to them on the swing on the front porch every Sunday after doing chores for ten fucking years; It's what got me through the chores, knowing a swing, all by myself, and some great music was coming up. They are and always will be my #1, and I absolutely will not pick a favorite between the two. #3 is Transistor, and #4 is Blue, and Soundsystem has always been #5. With that said, I could easily see this one replacing Soundsystem in the next year. It's not the same as any of the others, it's not particularly any better than any of the others, but what's happening in my life right now will always be remembered because of this fucking album, same as Music and Grassroots. And 311, Transistor, Soundsystem, From Chaos, Evolver, Uplifter, and UP, for that matter. I am not the same person I was growing up and falling in love with Music and Grassroots, and to say that I can't love this one because it doesn't sound the same as those two is ridiculous.

The highest Stereolithic could probably get for me is my #6. But it is still too soon to rank it for me so we'll see in time.

Junkie, that reads harsher than I intended it to sound. Let me say it this way. The band has 10 full-length studio albums in its discography. I'm just curious why you seemed to expect the new one to automatically be in your top 5. What makes you say that? In theory, a 10th album could be anywhere from 1st to 10th. I guess it was 50-50 and you just were just hoping it would be in the top half instead of the bottom half?

I don't expect much from the band at this point, so I'm pleasantly surprised more than disappointed.
