Not a rating, just thoughts about U.P.
Time Bomb:
Has an infectious progression at first. A little boring, musically. I don't care much for the middle of the song where S.A. sings and Nick slow-raps. The chorus feels copy-and-pasted at points. I do kind of like the bridge. In all I guess it's not terrible... but it sounds like it should be a second-track on an album rather than the first. It's just not strong enough to be a good opener in my opinion.
Wild Nights:
Reminds me of that Listerine commercial from the 90's. The chorus is catchy but the way they emphasize "where would we BE" is annoying. Musically it's more fun than the first track, and I like the ending. I like Wild Nights more than Time Bomb.
Sunset in July:
Like the first two songs, this one has it's catchy moments. It's like Strong All Along on Quaaludes. I appreciate how these songs have more effects than anything 311 has done in recent years. The production is like a more crisp version of the blue album. Anyway, what wrecks this song is the "Bada dop dop dadia" and "whoaoaoa"... too soon after a song that features big times woahs.
Trouble:
This is my favorite song on the album I think. It's much different from other 311 songs in parts but sounds like an evolved 311. Nick sounds good. This song doesn't seem as contrived as the first three. There's something dark about the tone of this song while having an uplifting feel to it. Wow, half way done listening to the album already...
Count Me In:
Not really digging the intro. Sounds like the goo goo dolls or something. I do kind of appreciate that funk shit going on right before Nick starts singing. This song is just cheesy to me and I'm not totally sure what it's about. Nick's rap and "oooooooooooo" is the only real interesting part of the song. This one feels painfully contrived, though. Would be filler, or a b-side on earlier albums. Remember Take my money? How is Count me in any better than Take my money?
Rock On:
Even though it's extremely simple I like the music. Nick's rap doesn't sound like 311... almost sounds like a lazy quarashi. SA's rap is boring. I like the chorus though... 311 is mastering the art of making a very narrow vocal range sound half way decent. Sadly though, 2 minutes into this song and I'm bored. It just doesn't have much energy to it, and it doesn't keep my attention. I disapprove of the way every guitar solo sounds like a Bob Rock song. And this one in particular isn't that impressive.
Weightless: Music-wise it sounds like a DTOM out take. Incredibly boring and nauseatingly repetitive chorus. How this song made the cut on an 8 song album is beyond me. I hate to think of the abominations on the cutting room floor.
And a ways to go:
Just boring as fuck. Not sure what the message is about. Couldn't stay focused on it long enough to really get the lyrics or anything. The one positive thing I can say is Nick sounds good. But can he sing it live? Doesn't matter, I doubt it will ever get played. They must know it would put the audience to sleep.
Overall this album once again shows flashes of potential. But I'm pretty tired of flashes of potential. I think you could take all the best songs off of their last 4 albums and make one solid album. I don't expect anything better in the future.

What about songs like Misdirected Hostility and Beyond the Gray Sky that have repetitive choruses as well...You hate those?$ayzak wrote: Weightless: Music-wise it sounds like a DTOM out take. To play Devil's Advocate for a minute... Misdirected Hostility and Beyond the Gray Sky, and every other track on the Blue Album are indeed repetitive. I don't personally think there is anything wrong with a repetitive chorus, but I can definitely see how Weightless is one of those that is... not very good. It's very monotone, and only one word. There is very little else during the chorus that makes the song interesting, and because there are so many and it is so long, it takes up the majority of the track. It would be nice to hear something different within the confines of the song every now and then. I wouldn't call it "nauseating," that's a little harsh. The instrumental for the chorus is quite good, even heavy (in my opinion) but the vocals ruin it. It's definitely one of my least favorite on the record.
Other than that, I pretty much disagree with everything the OP said. Respectfully, of course.

Re: Not a rating, just thoughts about U.P.
... Usually a chorus is intended to be repeated after each verse. I think they just need to re-write better choruses all around.
Re: Not a rating, just thoughts about U.P.
Weightless takes the obvious fall on this album for it's sub-par chorus. What makes it sub-par is the fact that it doesn't really tie itself in to the rest of the song. And at least Misdirected Hostility and Beyond the Gray Sky have a point, lyrically, that meshes into the rest of the tune. Weightless' chorus comes out of nowhere and offers no explanation towards it's meaning. We're weightless...you've made your point, now why and how?
Honestly I think it's a left over chorus from the "Space Travel" concept album Nick proposed. Regardless, it doesn't really fit the song. It is catchy as hell though.
And to knock Mr. Rock a bit...the best track on the album (arguably) is Rock On. It's got some of the best production, vocals, flow and a sweet ass guitar solo. There's a missed note @ exactly 3:10 in the track that sounds dead, flat and kind of like Tim let go of the fret and let the open string ring accidentally. Why was this not edited out? Really?!

Oh, and see I never noticed that until now and that one note has ruined it for me. Thanks a lot!antism wrote:And to knock Mr. Rock a bit...the best track on the album (arguably) is Rock On. 311 are too focused on the hollywood crap and more interested in pop culture/fashion. They're so hurt by Amy Winehouses death... Now all they care about is a shitty drug addict with no-talent, that is truly distorting their brains/writing abilities.

this isn't a first for 311
see no control as an example. it's pretty much 2 vocal tracks thrown on top of a great riff played clean/wah then again on distortion but seem to have nothing to do with each other, yet everybody (myself included) puts transistor on a pedestal.
