he "respects the band too much" to let anyone (except himself, of course) hear their music. it's only respectful if HE gets to listen AND makes sure everyone else knows it.

I can't understand that mindset. In a few weeks we will all have heard it many, many times and this will be a moot point. Why the delay? If you don't leak it now, the torrent will ABSOLUTELY be available online the day of release anyways. Anybody that you are worried will download this leaked torrent early without paying the band via preorder is not going to pay for the album on launch date either, so they will get it free no matter what happens. And then there's us who will pay in advance to hear it, but are forced to wait for a product that is completed for some reason. Why isn't the album released digitally the day after mastering? This would be a truly indie approach (isn't 311 pretending to be indie now?) and would be appreciated by the fanbase that paid (temporarily) for a private island. Is 311 really marketing to anyone other than the loyal fanbase at this point? The only point to creating a release date is for buzz marketing to a mass audience. They should know by now that those days are in the past.

TLDR the album will still sell to just as many people that would have bought it anyways (regardless of leak, it's not the mainstream music audience paying for 311's stuff from my view)
