311 on Last Call w/ Carson Daly: 3/19

According to pollstar.com ... 311 will be featured on Last Call w/ Carson Daly on the 19th.

Supposedly w/ interview, and footage from 311 day.

Apparently so...

His show sucked pretty hardcore in the standard "latenight" format. So they 86'd the desk, and the band... and started doing interview clips... kinda in a Byron Allen style, if you know who that is. There's way too many black and white clips, and alternating camera angles to make it "edgy"... but it's a better fit for him, than the old format.

Should be interesting to see the interview portion...

My guess is it'll be Nick alone, or Nick and P-Nut... but ya never know. Hopefully the entire episode devotes a good amount of time to 311. Usually w/ shows like that, it's a little 2 minute clip, and a performance. I think w/ Carson sometimes they cover multiple people in one show ... but considering he's a 311 fan, maybe they devote the whole episode to them. We shall see.

I am glad they showed Flowing, looked good. Sounded good...almost to good. I wonder if any editting was done. A nice little interview too...

tim invokes jerry in some songs with his use of trills and the mu-tron envelope filter. that's the only reason you could compare them to the GRATEFUL dead.

It's not the first time that the comparison has been made....

...In a world where attention spans are rapidly shrinking, how does a band like 311 — who have successfully toured the states every summer since 2005's Don't Tread on Me — still pack arenas while staying musically dormant? Drummer Chad Sexton thinks he's got the answer.

Sexton said that, over the course of 10 albums, they've managed to assemble a rabid fanbase who've supported the band through thick and thin. They're a loyal bunch, and their devotion rivals that of even the most die-hard Deadhead.

"I think we have the same appeal as a band like the Grateful Dead," he explained. "We have some Deadheads in the band, and when they stopped touring, Phish kind of took over for them, and maybe Dave Matthews Band has some of that same appeal as well. We can jam on our [songs] like those bands, but I'd say we're kind of a band between — and I'm not comparing us to these bands, but just in the level of status and accomplishment, and that they're still together — U2 and Phish. It's somewhere in the middle of that, and we're hoping to define that a little better over the next couple of years. It's a weird phenomenon: We keep playing, and kids are having a great time every summer.

"We've picked up a comparable following, I guess," Sexton continued. "We wanted to make sure we tour every summer, regardless of our records, because we're here to play live music. We don't want to spend a summer getting away from the people."

Carson's new format is pretty awesome. I think this is 311's best TV appearance. The only one that comes close is Down on Letterman.

I was wondering about editing too. I put together a clip with Carson in the left channel and the webcast in the right channel. On Carson, it sounds like they added a little reverb to Nick on "tell" and "hell" and it sounds like they lowered SA's harmonies in the chorus. Besides that, it pretty much sounds the same. I don't hear anything that sounds like vocal autotuning.
