a pet peeve

Post by $lmjimy311 »

i hate it when people on here say that 311 is just "maturing" to defend that they aren't as good as they used to be. just because you're getting more mature (and im assuming you also mean getting older by that) does not mean you must start to produce music that is not of equal caliber. as i right this, im listening to rub a dub and god i wish for the next album to have a song like this. something different. something that i know im not gonna hear if i turn on g105.1 home of the ryan secrest show where you can hear america's top 40 all day everyday. a lot of artists that produce music of equal caliber as they "mature" as they did when they were younger. im not saying i dont like the new stuff, hell im one of the few that absolutely love evolver and i give uplifter a pretty high rating as well. but after going on a 311 binge and listening to all other albums, their music right now just doesnt compare. and thats not a bad thing, all bands go through this period. and they have potential to be back on top of their game. its doable. but anyway, the main point. stop saying that they're maturing as an excuse for not being good. its a stupid ass argument. think of a better one. thanks

The "Go" demo from dtom had soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much potential.

For me IMO. The fact they dint make an effort to make that a song kills me inside because that was the song that got me excited for the album.

But what do you kno. They some how made shit from gold. Solarflair demo vs the porduction song for ex. Oh another one. Grifters demo and Long for the flowers.

A lot of people who say they are maturing aren't using at as a replacement for being "not good anymore"
A lot of those people think their sound is maturing, but they ARE still in fact good. Me being one of them.

I'll go ahead and agree with this. I don't think people are using the word "maturing" as an excuse but more of a assessment of where they are now. Honestly after twenty years in the biz it's kind of hard not to see a reflection of this in their music.

12 years what? huh?

who gives a shit? well, i guess that what pet peeves are, shit nobody should care about, but bother you anyhow. mature, getting old, who fucking cares really? you dont like it, fine. post a page long thread on the board about it, but move on. 311 isn't the only band in the world. this crying game about 'shit doesn't hold a candle to grassroots' is MY pet peeve.

haha. I'm surprised Jimmy let this last post go after the two page "war" we had last month. I'm proud of the cold shoulder Jimmy.

jimy, your epiphanies are the equivalent of people like FreeRay's brainfarts.

Agreed. You can't make the same sounding music for 20 years and have success. There has to be some growth and change in order to keep people listening. I think they've done a good job of sticking to their original "sound" while also branching out with some different stuff. It's all personal preference really. I firmly believe they have matured, and I'm sure they believe so as well. I'd hope so anyway, because a bunch of mid 30 year olds rap rocking with a stoner vibe probably wouldn't get it done anymore.

i kinda find some of their older lyrics to be more "mature" than it is now. not all, but some.

I am pretty much done with following 311 around this country. Don't get me wrong, I WILL BE AT 311 DAY 2010 and I will catch them every time they hit Salt Lake City....but I am DONE following them around. I actually liked Uplifter for a month or so, but now the album is just collecting dust.

"when we turn to pop the show will stop"

Stop already...
