Unfortunately, I am still like Natty, but from a week ago. It sucks, too. I really wanted to like this record, but it's just so inconsistent and at times cheesy.

If the internet never existed, this would probably be my favorite record of the year.

I'm also liking this album more and more, the more I listen to it. So yeah, I guess it's "growing on me". It is a little cheesy at times, but oh well....you can find a little bit of cheese in just about every 311 album.

You are going to have to use a better word than "good" to describe this record, Jim. It's too ambiguous. To me, it seems like you enjoy this record like I enjoy the movie Can't Hardly Wait. Sure, it's total teen love cheese, but it has its moments. However, I could never compare it to a truly "good" movie.

In fact, that's more what I think Uplifter is like. There are some really clever moments, but ultimately it's a product made for youthful consumption. Maybe I'm just getting older and I can't relate to the band like I used to. Fortunately, this isn't something I lose sleep over.

see i dont take music as serious as most of you do. i dont look for some deeper sophisticated meaning in music. i take music as entertainment, if it entertains me, its good. what i think you're referring to is a classic. this isnt a classic by any means. stairway to heaven is a classic. what i mean by uplifter being good is that it entertains me, its something fun to sing along to, has some cheesy lyrics at times, but also has some brilliant ones, the music is enjoyable, and its over all fun to listen to.

cant hardly wait kicks ass in its genre of films. its 90's teen flicks, and its an instant classic in its genre. uplifter in its genre (alternative rock), is by far the best thing out right now (IMO). you have to compare it to what it is, otherwise its comparing apples (311) to oranges (led zep)

im not sure if alot of htat made sense, its all stream of consciousness and im really just trying to get back to reading angels and demons

311 has always been CHEESY AS FUCK.

You guys are just jaded turds.

funky gas by my way all the day I couldn't laugh
oh by now I'm chill with it, bare ass in my face
i'm ok but Chad's like "Uh-uh no he isn't"
so I proceed to hear him get loose with the *fart beat boxing*
fartin' all over my face sometimes my tummy

I totally agree with your point about cheesiness, but i don't think (personally) that that verse is the way to show it. They're certainly not great songwriting, but I love those little "stories/episodes" in their songs.

I do too, but that is some of the cheesiest shit I've ever heard in any song. ever.

But I think it's still fuckin greatness.

I'm just tryin to show that the cheesiness goes all the way back to everyone's beloved Grassroots. It's nothing new.

See, that doesn't seem like cheese to me. That's more of a youthful attempt at humor. It's 311's attempt at serious content that turns into cheese. Or maybe cliche is the word I am looking for.

Regardless, it is hard to fully articulate what I mean and I will try again when I don't have limited time to reach the liquor store (insert Urge reference).

I think that 311 is all about having fun lyrics and killer breakdowns.

311 is about being rich, wearing white pants and releasing albums that people keep buying just so they can go whinge on TB.

Then why tackle these subjects in that fashion (besides getting paid)?

And going back to the quote about how you view music(k?), Jim. If I want meaning, I'll read some Clarke, Dick, or another author. When it comes to music, it's all about the music (which in itself is ambiguous). What makes good music? For me, it's all about the interaction of sound presented in an original fashion void of the tools made standard for selling music as a product. I wish I could articulate that in a cleaner fashion, but it's almost six in the AM and I am drunk.

I suppose, ultimately my biggest beef with the record is that it is the outcome of a collective of humans trying to SELL music, ideas, images, and emotions rather than a collection of individuals trying to MAKE their own music, ideas, images, and emotions.

Bottom line. 311 is the definition of sell out, in my eyes. They have been for a while, and this record is the continuation of it.

The problem is that there are some really good ideas on this record that are stunted to appeal to the masses. The interaction of art and capitalism at work, baby!
