Who said anything about being ashamed? I'm very close to my family as well....but if I had birthday plans during the afternoon, I would want to opt out of family time unless it was some kind of big get together/family bbq~

1. Parentals are missionaries
2. Easter is a HUGE thing...like a week long dealio. They start busting out the christian films early on in the week.
3. Yes, big get together. An all day deal, lots of food, lots of people, lots of giving thanks that HE IS RISEN!

So yeah, my family is pretty religious. World revolves around church and God. Social activities for them is going to church and mingling with church people for 3 hours on sunday mornings and an extra added hour on sunday night when it's not "Family Night at Home". Along with the hour on wednesday night. My mom's highlight of the week is going to choir practice after church on wednesday nights.....yeah.
I can see how they can do that since we go to a church with over 2,000 peeps, so you really never get sick of seeing the same people and there's always something going on. But, not my sorta thing...

And no, I'm not ashamed about it , and yes, I am very close to my family as well. That's what they like to do, and really all they know, so whatever, I just let them do their thing and not bitch. So no, if I decided to say I'm not gonna be there, they wouldn't be too happy with such decision. They wouldnt stop me, but tension for sure.
In conclusion, I wouldn't wanna be put in such position bc I enjoy celebrating my birthday in a not-so christian-like way. AKA can't do it with my family, gotta rely on my friends for that. SOO that's why I think it would suck to have your birthday on Easter Sunday!
