Good Bands That Cover Outside Of Their Genre???

Post by rchrhds29 »

Hey, as many who have seen my posts here before know I am a pretty big fan of Reel Big Fish. One of my favorite things about them is that they do really great covers of songs by bands outside of their musical genre, ska, like A-Ha's "Take On Me", Tom Petty's "Won't Back Down", Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York", to name just a few. But they are the only band I really know of that does good covers outside of the genre they usually play so curious if people know of other bands that do this?? And if so, please name the band and the name of the song(s) they covered.

Also, here is a full list, full as I know of, of all songs Reel Big Fish have covered throughout their career:
"Take on Me"
"Twist and Crawl"
"Authority Song"
"Mama Were All Crazy Now"
"Veronica Sawyer"
"The Long Run"
"Keep A Cool Head"
"Talk Dirty To Me"
"Monkey Man"
"Nothin' But A Good Time"
"Brown Eyed Girl"
"Won't Back Down"
"Bye Bye Miss American Thighs" (parody)
"Punk Rock Karl" (parody)
"Boys Don't Cry"
"Gigantic"
"Hungry Like The Wolf"
"Kiss Me Deadly"
"The Love Boat" (Love Boat Theme Song)
"Mele Kalikimaka"
"New York, New York"
"Nothin Like A Dame"
"Radio Unfriendly"
"Another Day In Paradise"
"Lyin' Ass Bitch"
"Ask"
"We Close Our Eyes"
"Story of my Life"
"Talkin 'bout a Revolution"
"We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful"
"It's Not Easy"
"Dance Wid Me"
"So Lonely"
"Give It To Me"
"Rock It With I"
"Ska Sucks"
"Boss DJ"
"Main Street Electrical Parade"
"Unity"
"Snaps"
"Uniform of Destruction"
"Twist and Crawl"
"Stray Cat Strut
"What I Like About You" (unreleased)

All of these songs, besides "What I l Like About You" have been released one way or another, either on a RBF album or on a compilation or soundtrack.

Also, curious, for you Reel Big Fish fans, what is your favorite Reel Big Fish cover, besides "Take On Me" since that is too obvious of a pick, mine is: "Story of my Life"

Jane's Addiction is one of those band's that I used to not like but now really like, I'll definitely download that song, thanks logosteel.

On RBF cover's I would absolutely love if they ever covered "Smooth Criminal"

BBC radio 1 has a show called live lounge and the bands always have to do a cover. They have put out 6 or 7 compilations plus one that had bands doing 40 years of covers. There are some really great covers on the albums. Foo Fighters did "Band on the Run" and "keep the car running". Arctic Monkeys covered Amy Whinehouse and Girls Aloud. My current favorite person Newton Faulkner covered Kate Nash's "foundations" - that cover actually is what got me into him. The Automatic did a cover of "gold digger" which was amazing. I think it was Keane who did a cool mashup of bootylicious and dirrrty and called it "dirrtylicious".
