Greatest Album Of All Time???
What do you think is the greatest album of all time??
For me, it has got to be 'Kid A' by Radiohead.
Every single track on it is at least an 'A+' and "Ideoteque" is like an 'A+' to the 100th power.

Re: Greatest Album Of All Time???
I agree Kid A is the greatest Radiohead album.
I've never even considered an overall single greatest album by any artist/band and don't think I'll ever be able to.
My favorite modern band is Clutch, and my favorite Clutch album right now is Blast Tyrant. I highly recommend it if you want to rock out.

Re: Greatest Album Of All Time???
It's not too hard to single out one album when it is 'Kid A', it redefined music more than any other album ever has. Just wait five, max ten years, and you will see every single band that is worth anything list 'Kid A' as the album that influenced them the most.

( ) - Sigur Ros is my fave. It's probably the heaviest album outside of Sunn 0))) ever. Kid A is the best Radiohead album without question. Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Yanqui U.X.O comes very close for me as well. Republic by New Order is my favorite New Wave album ever because New Wave is awesome.

Re: Greatest Album Of All Time???
Fatlip: You listen to punk and you mention The Beatles, LOL.
The Beatles, The Beatles, The Beatles...that's all I've heard my entire life, about how great and innovative they were. While I don't like them, at all, I definitely do recognize that they were innovative, although I think they get WAY too much credit.
The idea that a band that ended in the 1960s is the band that last, or has most, innovated music is just absolutely laughable. So here are some other bands / groups / musicians that were great innovators in music:
The Velvet Underground (considered a form of punk ten years before punk bands started and an emo act like 30 years before emo started)
Bob Marley (or whoever started reggae) (I'm not sure if he was the first reggae musician, almost positive he wasn't, but I don't know that much about reggae so not sure who the first reggae act was)
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (innovators in rap)
Black Sabbath / Judas Priest (Sabbath being credited as the first metal band and Priest for redefining metal)
The Sex Pistols / The Ramones / Gang of Four / The Clash (innovators in punk)
Whoever the first ska band was (ska is one of my favorite brands of music so I should know who this was but I don't)
The Big Band Groups of the 1920s
James Brown and other early black American acts
The Pixies (Kurt Cobain once said that Nevermind was his attempt to sound like The Pixies)
Sunny Day Real Estate (innovators of emo)
The Mr. T Experience (generally considered the first pop punk band)
Black Flag / Minor Threat (innovators in the straight edge movement and hardcore)
The Beastie Boys (innovators in rap rock)
Bob Dylan / Woody Guthrie (innovators in folk rock and putting politics into music)
Goldfinger (too my knowledge the only ska band to ever experiment with rapping)
Jeremy Enigk (lead singer of Sunny Day Real Estate, but also pretty innovative with his first solo record 'Return of the Frog Queen' where he played: guitar, bass guitar, piano, keyboards, and conducted a 24 piece orchestra)
White Zombie (first metal band to mess with electronica, that I know of)
...and of course, the late, great Michael Jackson (so musically important a description isn't necessary)

Re: Greatest Album Of All Time???
The only thing is, all the groups you listed probably got started listening to the beatles.
Re: Greatest Album Of All Time???
what does punk have to do with anything? do you have any idea that original punk "hated that fucking metal shit" black sabbath? did you know the sex pistols didnt actually even make music? if you consider letting a bunch of whiny cunts pick up instruments and bang on them innovative, then yeah, sex pistols were the innovativest.
and ska started very early .. most credited to desmond dekker -- from it came reggae.. then the second, third, and fourth waves of ska hit, none of which sounded like original ska. two-tone kept soooome of the original but not too much. skanking was originally an in-place shuffle, not that arms swinging, people flying stuff you see over the past 2 decades.
goldfinger was not the only ska band to rap.. check out 20 Inch Long. rap and ska is stupid.. jus sayin
and just because black flag was from DC like minor threat and they were friends, i wouldn't credit them too much with straight edge.

Bad Brains, anyone? I mean this is a 311 forum, so... and the reggae influence on I and I Survived (Dub) is awesome.
Re: Greatest Album Of All Time???
bad brains rules -- but none of their albums are my favorite. if i had to pick one.. it definitely wouldn't be a reggae one.

Re: Greatest Album Of All Time???
I like the novelty of the reggae album. I think its interesting to see the doing something radically different (plus its an enhanced cd showing their recording process for it).

Re: Greatest Album Of All Time???
Keep in mind I don't listen to that album on a daily basis.
Albums that I think are the most listenable:
Dusty Springfield - Dusty In Memphis
The Clash - The Clash (UK version with the extra US tracks tacked at the end on a burned disc)
Kanye West - Late Registration (I can listen to this album in any mood I'm in)
Otis Redding - Immortal
Al Green - Greatest Hits
Latin Playboys - Latin Playboys
Sonic Youth - A Thousand Leaves
Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians
Aretha Franklin - Spirit in the Dark
The Flying Burrito Brothers - The Gilded Palace of Sin
The Beatles - With the Beatles
Freedy Johnston - Can You Fly
Robert Cray Band - Strong Persuader
The Go Betweens - Spring Hill Fair
Frank Ocean - Nostalgia, Ultra (It needs a proper release with higher fidelity, then that would rank in my all time top 25)

Yuck Kanye West!!! Stupid egotistical asshole! South Park's parody of him was spot on!
Also, I predict when Rolling Stone releases their updated 500 Greatest Albums of All Time that 'Kid A' will be in the top ten, in the original list (like in 2004 or 2005) it was 250 or so by the 2010 list it jumped to number 61, the largest jump of any album on the list by far.
