Music DVD/Blu-ray

Post by dj3stripes »

Some favorites?

2 Skinnee J's: "Next big thing" Final show (not really but it was for a long time)

Beastie Boys: Awesome I Fucking Shot that

NIN : Beside You in Time

Moonshine music label had a bunch of cd's called "Mixed Live", mostly house/breaks/club that came with a 5.1 mix dvd as well of live dj's such as Ferry Corsten, Baby Anne, Carl Cox, Dave Aude, and a few others

Any music dvd/blu-rays I should keep an eye out for that you enjoy?

I'd say that 311 Day 2004 is pretty much a mandatory buy for anyone here, it's 55 songs and you can get it on Amazon for less than $5, it's a duh.

I also personally own Enlarged to Show Detail 1 & 2, although I mostly bought them for the bonus CD that came with each of them.

The other concert DVD's which I would own and would recommend in order of how I would recommend them are:

1. Reel Big Fish: Live at the House of Blues
The absolute kings of ska, although in the concert they yell out several times "We're Number 87". RBF put on one hell of a performance, the concert clocks in at 108 minutes long and includes virtually all of their best songs like "Beer", "Sellout", "Take On Me" (yes I know this is a cover, but they play it so well and so often I consider it now their song), "All I Want Is More", and "Valerie".

The concert also includes all of the quirky, immature, funny as hell, antics that fans of RBF love and expect, I'll only mention one though so I don't ruin them for anyone who buys it. When they play "S.R" (Suburban Rhythm) after they play it lead singer Aaron Bennett yells "One More Time", and they don't do this just once, oh no, no, no, this is RBF, they do it like eight to ten times and play "S.R." that many times, and the best part is each subsequent time they play it in a different muscial style, I won't name the styles they do it in cause that will ruin a lot of the fun, but obviously the first time they play it they play the ska version.

Finally, Reel Big Fish: Live at the House of Blues is the ONLY concert dvd that I have ever seen or heard of where the band actually does an accompanying audio commentary track, and it's RBF so it's SUPER FUNNY!!!!

2. Radiohead: Live (Germany 2001)
It's Radiohead, so of course the performance is just jaw dropping, duh. Also it's like 110 minutes so has a good amount of material and includes some of my favorites like, "Karma Police", "Ideoteque", "Paranoid Android", "Street Spirit", and "Airbag". However, I am gonna be a little overcritical here, because, like most of you I have never seen Radiohead live, as they don't tour the states that often, so I was a little disappointed in that it doesn't include a single track from 'Pablo Honey' and only has two tracks from 'The Bends' and also doesn't include their masterpiece "Everything In It's Right Place", as well as having like four or five tracks from 'Amnesiac', personally by far my least favorite album. But in the end it's Radiohead, and no one is as creative and innovative on stage as them, so yeah just buy it.

3. Anti-Flag: Death of a Nation
Best political punk band absolutely unquestionably, concert was taped between 'The Terror State' and 'For Blood and Empire' so it is mostly stuff from their best albums, lots of songs from 'A New Kind of Army', 'Underground Network', 'Mobilize', and of course 'The Terror State'. Contains what I think is their most poignant song in their career, '911 For Peace', unfortunately, however, it isn't the opening song and doesn't include the excerpt from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech that is on 'Mobilize' and is the way they opened every single concert supporting the release of 'Mobilize', I personally saw them in Cincinnati, Ohio, Cleveland, Ohio, their hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (twice), Chicago, Illinois, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in Indianapolis, Indiana during the 'Mobilize' tour and have to say seeing that style of opening was the most politically potent concert experiences I have ever experienced. Oh, and the DVD has a ton of special features, including: the video for 'Turncoat', the band playing three or four acoustic versions of their song, band interviews, and some other stuff I can't remember

4. Alkaline Trio: Halloween at the Metro
Performed in the trio's hometown of Chicago they put on a really strong performance, however, I would warn that Alkaline Trio is one of those bands that is either love em or hate em, if your not familiar with them they are a punk band, but, are probably the darkest punk band of all time with virtually all of their songs focusing on such themes as dealing with a breakup (and getting revenge, usually via violence), depression, and suicide

5. Goldfinger: Live at the House of Blues
The second best ska band ever, in my opinion, I just picked this up via Amazon about a month ago for 22 cents, so if your a fan of ska you honestly can't afford to not buy this dvd

6. Nirvana: Live at Reading (great performance, although I'm not as big of a Nirvana fan as I once was)

7. Rage Against the Machine: Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium (really strong performance)

Also, I am going to recommend that people do NOT buy any DVD by Sublime, as a friend of mine has all three of them and all of them have extremely poor audio quality.

the only response for this thread is "the Last Waltz"

and maybe "Floodfest '93"

lol...jokes aside, Incubus at Red Rocks sounds great but there is a lot to be desired from the set list, but th 10 minute version of "Vitamin" ALMOST make up for this

I've picked up three concert DVD's recently that I think are all worth picking up, here they are:

AC/DC: Plug Me In (2 Disc Version): If you like AC/DC even a tad bit you absolutely owe it to yourself to pick the DVD up immediately! It sells for like $2 to $4 on Amazon so it is very cheap. But the incredible thing about it is it's length. It runs nearly six hours!!!! Better yet it features concerts from the Brian Johnson of AC/DC and from the Bon Scott era, so you get the old and the new here. One note though: DO NOT BUY THE 3 DISC VERSION!! It's like 7 hours, so only an hour longer and that hour is just interviews, so pick up the two disc DVD set.

Reel Big Fish: Live in Concert!: Great set, includes all their best tracks and very good audio quality here, Reel Big Fish always puts on a great show, you won't be disappointed.

Radiohead: The Astoria London Live: This DVD is of a rather early Radiohead concert, pre 'OK Computer', so my gripe with it is it doesn't have all my faves from 'OK Computer' and 'Kid A'. However, the DVD has awesome audio quality, has great tracks, and is cool to see Radiohead early in their career.

Also, I should be getting Metallica: Quebec Magnetic on Blu Ray this week as I ordered it a few days ago on Amazon so will tell ya about it sometime soon.

Oh thought I'd drop this in...I've been emailing back and forth with Peter Raspler for a little over a year, recently asked if any plans to possibly release 311 on blu ray, and he said it's pretty unlikely for the near future. Thought some of you may want to know.
