Me too, but it seems as if Mercury really was into the opera stuff. On the last part of the video (no captions) he says that Freddy recorded a video where he's rehearsing a song with Monserrat Caballero, and while she's singing some coloraturas, in a moment he recognizes the part and goes on to the piano to play from memory the orchestral part of the exact snippet from Rigoletto. Pretty cool.

it was just a joke, musically it's of course inspired by opera, but lyrically it's still about aids.

I thought he didn't have AIDS when the song was written. But I have no idea.

In fact, as I understood from this guy, it's about a man killing and selling his soul to the devil, and then asking for redemption to God before dying. It makes a lot of sense given the lyrics and the meanings.
