Have you guys listen to the ambient music of Matthew Cooper(Eluvium)}? I saw him open for Explosions in the Sky in D.C. a couple of years ago and had to get his entire catalogue. His work is very drone-based and minimal but absolutely gorgeous soundscapes are created. His album Talk Amongst the Trees blows the lid off my skull. The new album Similes takes a somewhat more conventional approach with the first album to feature vocals and percussion. Personally I think his voice works very well with the music but many people haven't warmed up to it.
