Saw this today (I know a few days old) but here's an portion of an interview with nick from the weekend....
Nick Hexum was reminded just how bat poo crazy some of his band's fans can be when it comes to new material when one of them hacked his email account awhile back. But, hey, at least the guy confessed.
Half a decade after the fact. "There was a time when all of our demos of the songs that we were working on got leaked, and we could not figure out how this happened for so long," the 311 singer/guitarist recalls. "That was back in like '05. Seven years later, we get this long letter from a fan explaining, 'OK, I'm the one. I guessed Nick's email password. I hacked in. I found the filesharing stuff that was intended for the band only.'
"It was crazy," he continues. "In his letter, he was like, 'I only gave them to two people.' And of course, they only gave them to two people, and the next thing you know, it's everywhere. It was irritating at the time, but it's a happy problem to have. We'd much rather have fanatics than not."
i doubt it.. that story coincides pretty much exactly what was said in that thread. in addition, look at the timing of the bump and the timing of the article
unless of course someone stole my story and emailed nick lol

nick, you should be fucking ashamed of yourself for fabricating part of the story for ease of answering an interview question... should have elaborated more on how you chill on a message board sometimes or at least given us a fucking shout out.
Did it ever occur to you guys that maybe the fact that you're talking about me in a topic I haven't even participated in is a sign that you're a bit boring?
wait...dave or alex, can't you use your super mod powers and some serious stalking to make a reasonable deduction of when a visitor might be someone from the 311 camp?
I'm not sure phpbb keeps super comprehensive logs, especially for anonymous visitors. I'm open to suggestions about how to research it, but I'm not sure it would be possible even if it logged everything...
Anybody know how to find out what IP range Nick's house or the Hive is in?
Another thing is that it could have been anyone Nick is close to that told him about the details being revealed here. It's cool to think the band themselves checked it out, though.
damn. i wish i could be more helpful on that but i cant. maybe emmy can go drive by the hive and pick up their wifi signal and post here from there and then you can log it? its a stretch i know, but a guy can dream right?
plus, its probably just joan in omaha or pnut. nick probably doesnt give two shits about visiting this place. i bet they're all laughing at how insignificant this place has become to the 311 community as everyone else just migrated to the bb.
