so I've been making these animations

Post by poolio »

I'm trying to use the language of painting in multiple sequences to create a subliminal narrative while simultaneously speaking on formal issues of color.

I'm pretty new to it and have been using this program called pencil. I'm not really that familiar with it yet, but I think it's a really interesting way to open myself up with materials as a painter, while still having a painter's concerns in mind. The title is just the name of the file...it doesn't actually have a title yet. But I'm using animation and live video. I've been looking at video painters like Jeremy Blake for inspiration.

I didn't like that at all.

Which is disappointing because I'm a big fan of your art.

Keep at it, maybe you'll figure it out more. Or just stick to your talents and usual medium.

I appreciate the feedback. I don't know if its the limitations of the program I'm working with or what. It's a lot of fun to make, but it doesn't mean they're going to look any good. I'm gonna keep playing with it. The MFA program I'm in has me doing all sorts of things I'm not used to doing. They want the first couple semesters to be about experimentation so I'm playing with as many materials as possible. i also got into making paintings embedded in resin. I'll post them soon. They're actually kind of neat.

That's not a very nice thing to say. I would never call you an asshole.

edit: Here's one of the resin pieces:

This one is a complete abstraction. It's cool because the paper becomes transparent when it's embedded in the resin.

i dated a girl from a prominent new york city art school for two years and even she made fun of cheesy artist statements. i think that this gives me a free pass for life to do the same. jk

just admit 'i did it because it looks sweet/feels chill'

the resin pieces look sweet

"Sweet" and "Chill" are totally valid. You have to believe in what you're doing and think its cool in order to create it. I, ultimately, want to make images that I enjoy, and that, hopefully, others can enjoy as well.

It's so fucking hard to make pure abstractions.
