so from what the nets saying its not hardware issue with "the grip of death" its all in the software. there was issues of it not displaying the proper bars. i dont have one so im not really sure whats up.

Yupp I got one. I fucking love it. No more lag like my 3G did. No reception problems at all. AT&T is great in my area (and generally most places in the midwest and on the east coast). I tried my hardest to death grip it and it never dropped a bar. The screen is fuckin gorgeous. And I am also desperately yet patiently awaiting the jailbreak. Don't give a shit about having a white one though, I keep mine in a case all the time anyway so the color isn't important. Besides, black is way more sexy. I think of white as something only the apple fanboys want. I hate most apple products, but the iphone really is the best phone out there. Fuck the droid kids.

the death grip thing is an issue with hardware, not software. here's how it works:

5 bars (full, right?) means that you have 60% signal or more -- some people do not see the issue, some do; regardless, they all have it. let's say you're operating at 90% and you cup your hand over the corner of the phone, signal drops down to 70% and you see no loss in the bars. however, AT&T's terrible reception problems in many many areas lead to a lower signal in most cases. lets say you're 3 bars in and then you cover it. 3 bars means ~35%, or so it seems. so now if you cup the phone again with only ~35% signal, it's going to drop down the same amount (not sure the exact dB level, but i'm going to use 20% for arguments sake) -- you're now operating at ~15% signal, and the signal will drop down to 1 bar.

if you cup any smartphone in that area you will get signal loss; however, apple designing the antenna to be on the outside makes it a bit more of an issue than other phones. you need to realize that inside every phone is a radio beacon (not bacon, mmmmm, bacon) transmitting RF -- when you put your hand against it, your hand absorbs the signal and converts the RF into heat; and unfortunately heat cannot communicate with cell towers.

this has been a lesson in modern electronics.

Definitely an android phone, but I'm switching to Verizon. I'm either going to get a droid x or find a regular droid off-contract to hold for a while until later this year when something super sweet comes out.

Be careful if you get the Droid X.
If your into the ultimate haxors i would avoid it due the motorola and their uber gay boot loaders and some other 3 files that they have on it. The phone will not boot if you put on mod'd roms of android.

i got the Droid X today and it is fucking amazing. this thing is loaded. i hate att and wanted a smart phone on verizon and this finally looked awesome enough to make the jump. i love how it is powered by google, this shit is epic and the screen size is awesome, watching videos kicks ass and the camera is insane. people might be in love with apple so they will automatically hate the droid, but they don't know what they are missing. i think this is the best phone out there fo sure, my roomate has the iphone 4 so i've used both and droid wins in my opinion

I am not sure that Apple is going to recall the iPhone 4....they have to much confidence to do that. I do see however, that they will start making small hardware changes to hopefully resolve the issue.

I am a huge iPhone fan...but refuse to buy the new phone until the issue is resolved. Apple=Epic fail on shipping the 4 with this problem. I sure hope the entire QA department was fired.

If this gets fixed, I immediately run to a store and upgrade.

The phone is sweet, minus the issue.

I have Verizon, and as much as I love the coverage...its too expensive for my wallet.

But a Droid X? I wouldn't bother since it doesn't have 2.2 and it's basically like the Droid Incredible. Also Droid 2 is on its way.

Samsung Epic looks amazing though.

Update: Just picked up a motorola droid today from a guy on craigslist. It freaking sweet. I've been wanting an android phone for a while now and it feels like Christmas.

fatlip: The Galaxy S phones look great. Since I got my droid off-contract, I may get the Galaxy S when it comes out on Verizon (which unfortunately may not be happening for a little bit)

tehshewz: Yeah, the modding problems with the droid X definitely helped me make my decision not to get it.
